From webcomicsreview.com's Artistic History of Webcomics:
It's been said before, many times, many places. The internet allowed everyone who ever wanted to the opportunity to produce a webcomic. It's the only place where you can have an audience of 3 and still keep producing. If you have a good idea, or decent art, you'll eventually draw the numbers. If you're a marketing whiz, this happens that much faster. Unfortunately, this also means if you have absolutely no talent, you can continue to produce for your audience of 3 for months, or even years.
Counting from the first comic Matt wrote, it'll be 4 years of our attempts at destroying comickry on the internet on the 22nd!
