The dvd-rw drive came today, so I popped it in and turned on my new computer for the first time. To my surprise, nothing exploded, though the cpu fan at full blast is pretty loud. I turned it down to half-speed and now it's about as loud as old Inverse. Spent all my after-work time setting up windows instead of making you a comic, but I think you'll forgive me. There's still not much actually set up yet, and I have only one mouse and keyboard and monitor, so I've setup vnc on Inverse to reduce the need to switchify. One thing which irks me is how the integrated audio picks up interference from the hard drive and video. Video changes sound fuzzy and the HD sounds high-pitched and electronic :\ Guess I'll have to pull over my SBLive for listening to headphones.

Had a 2-hr meeting with a manager about my project, and she went away positive, so now I just have to grind more code for a couple days and then set it up on an internal server (yet to be created) so our people can actually record their time off.

Owel, I should probably be more tired right now, so I'll skip off to la-la land for now.

To be honest, I have no idea what the hell this comic is supposed to be either. Based on the title, maybe I'd rather not know. Anyway, since I haven't seen any sign of Justin for a couple of days now, I suppose I should just be happy that any comic went up at all. I had, at one point last night, planned to put up a PGA or some other bit of fancifulness. Then I decided that it was late and I was tired and it was snowing again, so I went to sleep instead.

Was trying to quickly think up some comic so I could go to sleep, and that old qbasic game of gorillas throwing exploding bananas at each other while standing on buildings popped up, so I used that. When I was trying to think up a title, I somehow remembered all that Hot Gay stuff from OldManMurray, you know, like a Hot Gay Heterosexual Box of Cheerios or something. Anyway, I was tired, and now I'm full of carrots.

You need to find out what's making all that snow up there and shut it off! We're getting some nice Hot Gay Consecutive Rainy Days here, and I couldn't be happier!

This is a laugh-at-justin's-big-waste-of-effort story. :\

No, I didn't forget the root password again :p

So I finally install and run the Nero that came with my dvr-105 and it doesn't detect the damn drive... shit. I deinstall it and install the warezed version I was using before. Still no luck. "Must be that damn win2k service pack 3," I say! I go to uninstall the service pack. It's not available for uninstalling. I guess I forgot to check the box for the uninstallability before. OK, fine, I just installed this crap, I can reinstall with little pain, so I reboot into the win2k cd. Delete the old 2k partition (was named F: so it'd be out of the way) and make a new one. The new one names itself C: and screws up my whole order! Now how come the last partition on the drive named itself C:??? Anyway, I grumble, "I'll install like this just see if it was the SP3 and then fix the drive letter using my old box," so I do so. Now that windows is installed, I install Nero. No detecty dvd-ry. I frustratedly play with the sliding drive thinghy and detach the dvd-r from the system while it's running. Windows whined a little, so I shut down, open the case, and reinstall the dvd-r. Then for some reason, my usb ports stop working, so I can't use my mouse. I cry some and turn the computer and power supply off. Turn them on again with everything plugged in and the mouse now works. Haven't installed the video card drivers, so my screen is 640x480 in 256 glorious colors. Browsing the web requires that I install the nforce MB drivers so the ethernet port will be recognized. another reboot and I can browse the interweb straight to nero's site where I download a diagnostic utility which easily finds my drive (and says it reads dvd+rw??), so I wonder why nero can't see it, so I go to the nero updates page and notice that my version is 5.5.8~ and the newest version is 5.5.10~, so I download the update and install it and it can now see my drive. great. So why did my nice OEM send me a version of Nero that didn't work with my drive? That sucker was OLD. I've had a warez version for like a year or more and it was one sub-sub-version NEWER than the one from the store. Owel, I think I'll have to install the warez version again and upgrade it since my oem version doesn't have DVD templates!

So tomorrow, I just have to yank the HD out of the case (hooray for removable bays), hook it up to the old computer, delete and remake that partition so it'll be F:, reinstall the HD, and reinstall windows. Luckily, I hadn't installed much yet, so I still have a huge amount of that stuff to do.

It's still only day 2... maybe Matt should keep working on his PGA day for monday :)

Nero is a piece of shit. Just like it improperly authors S/VCDs, it also improperly authors DVD Video. Unless you're exclusively going to burn data discs, I recommend losing Nero and getting some good software. (Personally, I'd rather use RecordNow to burn the data discs as well, but I haven't read anything about Nero managing to screw those up.)

Oh yeah, your DVD-R drive should have no trouble reading DVD+R/RW, in addition to just about anything else you can throw at it except DVD-RAM. Writing will only work on DVD-R/RW, of course.

Didn't you learn your lesson about SP3 last time? :-p
